A Doodle a Day: Ten Year Doodle Journey

Exhibiting Artist: Nancy Carlson

November 16 – December 28, 2018
Opening Reception: November 16, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Artist Talk: December 11, 7:00 p.m.

In late fall 2012, author and illustrator Nancy Carlson heard two words from a neurologist that would rock the happy life she had created with her husband Barry McCool. Those words were Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), and Barry was just diagnosed with it.

What does an author and illustrator do when the family has no health insurance, is one rent check away from being homeless, has a husband swearing at her all day long, and the IRS breathing down her back? She keeps creating! Nancy continued to create children’s books, but she also created a blog called “Putting One Foot In Front of the Other,” which is all about their FTD journey. She also continued to draw and post a fun and inspirational doodle a day on her website and Facebook page.

Together, these small drawings create a visual journal and journey that allows Carlson the opportunity to express herself and celebrate life, while also learning how to manage the quickly growing needs of caring for her husband and preparing herself for his eventual death.

“This show is dedicated to the memory of my husband Barry McCool who died in November 2016. He was my biggest fan, and I know he would have loved this show of doodles.” – Nancy Carlson

PLEASE NOTE: Unframed Doodles ($100 each + tax) may be purchased and removed from the gallery only when the Gift Shop/Box Office is open: Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Please see sidebar for a complete listing of extended gift shop hours.

Nancy's story was recently featured in the Star Tribune! Check it out here.

About the Artist

Nancy Carlson is an accomplished children’s book author and illustrator who has published more than 60 books. She is one of the few people who knew even back in kindergarten what she wanted to do for a living: “Make pictures and tell stories!”

Nancy is a life-long Minnesotan. Born and raised in Edina, Minnesota, Nancy had a happy and fulfilling childhood surrounded by an outgoing family. Her parents read to her and her brother and sister every night. The comic books she loved to read as a child have influenced her style of drawing and use of color. Many of Nancy’s stories are taken from her own childhood experiences.

Nancy graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a major in printmaking, and became fascinated with children’s books while working at Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center. Nancy began to write her own stories and created accompanying drawings. It wasn’t long before she found herself approaching publishers with her own ideas for children’s books. She had numerous art exhibitions before getting into the publishing world and her artwork is held in many private and public collections. Recognition for her published work includes several Reading Rainbow selections, the Children’s Choice Award from the International Reading Association and Children’s Book Council, the Minnesota Children’s Museum Great Friends to Kids Award and several others.
